Penangkaran Buaya
Asam Kumbang

In 1959, the Asam Kumbang Crocodile Breeding Park was founded by Mr. Lo Tham Muk and Mrs. Lim, starting with just 12 crocodiles caught from the rivers and swamps around Medan. Mr. Lo kept these crocodiles as a hobby. At that time, crocodiles were still considered non-protected animals, so it was legal to catch and keep them for commercial purposes, as a hobby, and so on.

Over time, the original 12 crocodiles grew larger and were eventually moved to the 2-hectare breeding park that still stands today. When a crocodile reaches the age of 12, it begins to lay eggs. For the first time, a crocodile can lay around 10 eggs. As it gets older, a crocodile can lay up to 40 eggs. Typically, a crocodile lays eggs once a year. Whether or not these eggs hatch depends on the weather and the nesting conditions. Sometimes, none of the eggs hatch successfully, and they may all rot.

The types of crocodiles kept at the breeding park are the Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and the False Gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii), which are among the largest crocodile species in Kalimantan. Currently, there are estimated to be around 300 crocodiles, bred from the original 12 crocodiles first kept by Mr. Lo.

Every day, about 500 kg of dead chicken meat is needed to feed the crocodiles. However, as it has become increasingly difficult to source enough dead chicken meat to meet this need, it has become necessary to buy more expensive food in the form of fresh chicken heads and bones that have already been stripped of meat. This situation has led to higher costs for feeding the crocodiles.

The Asam Kumbang Crocodile Breeding Park was renovated in November 2021. The renovation aimed to provide greater comfort and safety for tourists who wish to learn more about these fascinating reptiles up close.
